8 Dirac equation as a special case of Cosserat elasticity

چکیده
We suggest an alternative mathematical model for the electron in which the dynamical variables are a coframe (field of orthonormal bases) and a density. The electron mass and external electromagnetic field are incorporated into our model by means of a Kaluza–Klein extension. Our Lagrangian density is proportional to axial torsion squared. The advantage of our approach is that it does not require the use of spinors, Pauli matrices or covariant differentiation. The only geometric concepts we use are those of a metric, differential form, wedge product and exterior derivative. We prove that in the special case with no dependence on the third spatial coordinate our model is equivalent to the Dirac equation. The crucial element of the proof is the observation that our Lagrangian admits a factorisation. Mathematics Subject Classification (2000). Primary 83E15; Secondary 53Z05.

Massless Dirac equation as a special case of Cosserat elasticity
We suggest an alternative mathematical model for the massless neutrino. Consider an elastic continuum in 3-dimensional Euclidean space and assume that points of this continuum can experience no displacements, only rotations. This framework is a special case of the so-called Cosserat theory of elasticity. Rotations of points of the continuum are described by attaching to each point an orthonorma...
متن کاملWeak solutions of the transmission problem in anti-plane Cosserat elasticity
The theory of Cosserat elasticity (also known as micropolar or asymmetric elasticity) was introduced by Cosserat brothers [1] and further developed by Eringen [2] to model the mechanical behavior of materials for which the microstructure is significant (see [3] for a review of works in this area and an extensive bibliography). The theory was intended to eliminate discrepancies between the class...
متن کاملExperimental Cosserat elasticity in open cell polymer foam
Reticulated open cell polymer foams exhibit substantial size e↵ects in torsion and bending: slender specimens are more rigid than anticipated via classical elasticity. Such size e↵ects are predicted by Cosserat (micropolar) elasticity, which allows points to rotate as well as translate and incorporates distributed moments (couple stresses). The Cosserat characteristic length is larger than the ...
متن کاملGranular hypoplasticity with Cosserat effects
This paper provides an extension to Cosserat mechanics of a recently proposed version of hypoplasticity [1], and this extension is achieved economically by means of a novel complex-variable formulation of Cosserat theory. The present work represents a compact synthesis and theoretical framework for both non-polar and polar hypoplasticity, and it encompasses various special cases considered in t...
متن کاملBending of a Cosserat Elastic Bar of Square Cross Section - Theory and Experiment
Pure bending experiments on prismatic bars of square cross-section composed of reticulated polymer foam exhibit deformation behavior not captured by classical elasticity theory. Perhaps the clearest example of this is the observed sigmoidal deformation of the bars’ lateral surfaces, which are predicted by classical elasticity theory to tilt but remain planar upon pure moment application. Such f...
